The Key to Digital Precision: Magnetic Angle Referencing and Zero-Point Determination
In turbocharger balancing operations, knowing the vibration magnitude alone is not sufficient; identifying exactly where (at which angle) the vibration occurs is the foundation of flawless calibration. At this point, Magnetic Angle Detection Technology comes into play as the hidden hero that enables our balancing machines to operate with the highest precision.
How Does the System Work?
Before the balancing operation begins, a special reference magnet is temporarily mounted on the turbo cartridge (CHRA) shaft. This magnet acts as a “navigation point” for the advanced magnetic sensors in the balancing machine:
-
Magnetization and Referencing: The magnet placed on the cartridge shaft defines the turbo’s initial (0°) position for the machine’s sensors.
-
Sensor Detection: When the turbo reaches high speeds (VSR balancing speeds), the sensors track each pass of the magnet with millisecond-level precision.
-
Precise Angle Identification: The balancing machine correlates the measured vibration data with this magnetic reference point. As a result, the exact degree at which the imbalance occurs is displayed accurately on the digital screen.
What Are the Advantages of This Technology?
-
Pinpoint Correction: By identifying the exact location of the vibration, it precisely indicates where the technician should remove material from the shaft (or add weight) without error.
-
High-Speed Stability: Unlike optical readers, magnetic sensors are not affected by oil vapor or ambient light; they provide stable data flow even at the highest rotational speeds.
-
Speed and Efficiency: Eliminates guesswork and trial-and-error. By providing the correct angle on the first measurement, it can reduce balancing time by up to 50%.
-
Repeatability: Since the same 0° reference is used for every measurement, the accuracy of the performed operation yields consistent results in repeat tests.
Achieve Precision Through Magnetism: Thanks to magnetic referencing, our machines deliver balancing results below factory tolerances (at micron-level precision), even on the most complex turbo models.
