The unique technical requirements of fan balancing directly affect machine design. Because fan blades create high aerodynamic drag (windage), the drive system must provide the torque to overcome this drag; moreover, since correction can often be made not at a free angle but on the existing blades or at specific bolt positions, it is essential that the software support fixed-position (vector splitting) correction.

Geometry also determines the number of planes: while a single plane may be sufficient for narrow, disc-like impellers, wide-bodied or double-inlet fans require two-plane dynamic balancing. The typical target for industrial fans is ISO 21940-11 grade G6.3; tighter grades may be required for high-speed special fans.
